BOONVILLE - Defending Mountain Valley Conference champion Starmount hosts Ashe County in the marquee matchup of Week Five.
The four-time conference champs sit at a perfect 4-0 on the season, including a 2-0 mark in the MVAC. The Rams are coming off two dominating wins over Forbush (49-0) and East Wilkes (26-3), where the defense has allowed a combined three points in two blow-out wins.
The Huskies come into the matchup in third place in the conference standings after withstanding a second-half surge by the Elks last week, holding on for the 41-34 victory in West Jefferson.
Ashe evened its overall record at 2-2 with the win and joins the Rams and Wilkes Central (3-1, 2-0) as the only other teams with unbeaten conference records at 1-0.
The Huskies will have to crack a stout Starmount defense that is allowing a stingy six points per game, while slowing down All-MVAC running back Chaston Martin and the Rams rushing attack.
Elsewhere in the Yadkin Valley, East Wilkes and Forbush hit the road in Week Five searching for their first wins.
The Cardinals held Starmount to 26 points last week but were unable to find the endzone, falling to 0-4 on the season. In East Bend, the Falcons found paydirt late to avoid being shutout for the second-straight game, but dropped to 0-4 with a 28-7 loss to West Wilkes.
East gets a shot at the 1-3 Blackhawks in Ronda tonight, while Forbush hits the road to take on 1-3 North Wilkes in Hays in two winnable matchups.
Coming off last Friday’s heart-breaking defeat to Ashe, Elkin heads into its bye week at .500 with a 2-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play.
The Elks return to the field next Friday when they welcome cross-town rival Starmount to Grissom Stadium for the annual Battle of the Bridge.
All games are set to kick off at 7:30.
