Letter to editor

To the edtMy role as chief executive officer for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont will end soon as I begin retirement. Although I am both excited and nervous to enter this next chapter of my life, I am confident that Lane Cook, who was recently named CEO by our board of directors, will keep local Girl Scouting on course with an unwavering commitment to delivering a high-quality leadership experience to every girl.

Tobacco out of the woods?

I saw a golden (leaf) opportunity.A tobacco field lies just 30 feet from the edge of my porch. That has aroused some bemused curiosity among folks in the office down in the city who probably have never seen a tobacco plant. So on a quiet Saturday last month, while I was outside puttering around, trying to find something to distract me from doing some real work, here came a tobacco priming machine.I’m two generations removed from tobacco farming, which onc...

The Theory of Wavitivity

What is the theory of wavitivity? Simply put, that if you wave to someone, they will wave back to you.Back in the late ’50s, another student and I would try it out while riding the band bus. We did add yelling, too, which only intensified the action. And, most people would wave back at us, even if they did think we were crazy. Why do people wave? I think it is a friendly thing to do. We acknowledge that we see them. And, yes, we do expect them to wave back to us....

A big splash in Elkin

So what could make the hometown better? Not that there’s anything in particular wrong with things here now; there’s not. But I got to thinking. What could make Elkin and Jonesville an even better place, a more exciting place? What could rally the hometown folks around the flag, so to speak? What could make our breasts swell a bit more with pride when we tell folks where we are from?I think most folks here would admit that putting a little charge into things ar...

Newspapers will not die

Forgive us if we’re not willing to write an obituary for newspapers — and will even challenge those who would espouse the idea.Pundits and skeptics use clever connotations such as dinosaurs facing extinction. It’s the same tired banter that was used when radio first came into existence and many thought signaled the end of the printed word. It’s the same pablum dished up when television was king and challenged newspapers with live action and immedia...

Matthew Hodge

ELKIN — On Oct. 3, 2014, God called home Mr. Matthew Paul Hodge, of Elkin, at Forsyth Medical Center after a short-term illness. He was a very special gift from God, and we were blessed to have him for 40 years on earth. Although Matthew is no longer with us on earth, another child of God has gone home. Matthew was a very unique, loving and caring young man. He was born Dec. 3, 1973, in Surry County to Lanny and Kathy Hodge. Matthew was a detention officer at Yadkin County Sherriff̵...

Master of cool at the old grocery

When I come across an ad for or news about Lowes Foods, a supermarket chain now based in Winston-Salem, I have to break into a bit of a smile. Bet a lot of you fellow older folks here in the hometown do, too.The chain doesn’t have stores here anymore, but at one time Lowes Foods was grocery king here. And it’s closer to my heart than for most because I’m a proud former employee. I worked at a store during my high school years here.

Letter to the editor

To the editor,Without a Republican Senate to oppose him, President Obama will, in his final 2 yrs, deliver more cronyism, collectivism, and corruption. So when an acquaintance confided that Thom Tillis was not her ‘first choice’, I was reminded that many of us vote as we did in highschool, selecting the guy who looks most like George Clooney. But there’s more at stake than a popularity contest this November, and I hope my friend votes to replace Hagan with Tillis....

Down the River Road

We were good little toters, all of us kids. There was a lot of toting to be done, on our farm in Surry County. We toted water from the spring to the barn, we toted tobacco plants from the plant bed to the patch, we toted ’taters out of the ’tater field, and the older kids occasionally toted the younger kids here and yon. If it needed toting and it wasn’t too heavy, the kids did the toting. But for years, I had studiously avoided using the word “tote.” I...

Terror too close for comfort

A little girl, about my age at the time, plays in a field as a bird chirps in a tranquil scene shown in an old, blurry, black-and-white TV ad.Then comes a countdown: 3-2-1. Next, a mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion arises. With that ad, which aired only once, on Sept. 7, 1964, America was introduced to the hard-hitting, provocative TV political-campaign ad.The Daisy Ad, as it came to be called because the little girl is picking the pedals of a daisy, is c...
