LeBron James and me — hometown buddies

OK, so it’s hard to see any kinship between LeBron James (6-foot-9, NBA superathlete) and me (shrunk down now to 5-foot-10, college dorm intramural athlete a long time ago). However, when James surprised me and a lot of other sports-minded folks a little more than a week ago by announcing that he’s going back to his hometown, he and I became kindred spirits. Fellow travelers. Bosom buddies. You can go home again, James said, in defiance of famous Asheville nove...

A miraculous healing occurs

I met Dr. Jim Mahan in the spring of 1988. He had a boat and I had boat fever. We went out on Lake Norman in it. It did god; the motor ran and it didn’t sink.Several months went by and Jim told me what had happened to him a few years back. He had been at a builder’s show in Charlotte. Suddenly, and without warning, he had to sit down. He couldn’t walk. An ambulance took him to the hospital. The next few hours, seven different doctors of various specialties examine...

A harsh Republican Party fight for a shot at an open North Carolina congressional seat goes to Mark Walker in a bit of a surprise to area Republicans.GOP voters in the district that runs along the Virginia border from Mount Airy to north of Raleigh picked Baptist minister Mark Walker of Greensboro over Phil Berger Jr. of Eden. Lawmakers try to have it both ways

Budget conferees change their rhetoric on the role of government, but not the underlying policies that undermine itThose who attended or watched online yesterday as conferees debated next steps in resolving the stalemate between the House and the Senate over North Carolina’s FY 2015 state budget must have felt at times as if they had stepped into some kind of time/space warp. Surely these weren’t members of the 2014 North Carolina General Assembly holdi...

Courting two lovers

I have two lovers on the side. One is nearby and the other is farther away. When I can spare some time for them I try to split it up between the two. They compete for my attention, and I find their jealousy over me so cute. The nearby lover is tall and particularly stunning when evening shadows fall across her face. I see her some when I am out and about here in the hometown, but I dare not call out to her and start something. But spotting her and admiring her ma...

Just wait till I hit age 100

My buddy in the church choir here in the hometown leaned over and remarked in awe: “100 years old. Wasn’t that something?”We had been pressed into service for the funeral of a neighbor and distant cousin of mine. In fact, Flora Tucker was just a month shy of 101 when she passed a month ago.I had a great-grandmother who made it to 99 and an aunt who made it to 97. But Flora was the first in the extended family to break the century mark.

Surprise! Pop quiz, job seekers

OK, I am now officially over the hill. That’s because word has come to my hometown news desk that folks now have to take tests on the internet when they go looking for a job.So if you view using a computer as something akin to kissing a rattlesnake, you’re probably going to be left poor, unemployed and sitting at home watching weekday TV soap operas and game shows. The trend is for employers to administer tests online in addition to the familiar job ...
