Saturday and Sunday March 29th and 30th The Mt. Rogers Volunteer Fire Dept. & Rescue Squad will host the annual Whitetop Mountain Maple Syrup Festival at various locations in Whitetop. The freezing cold nights and warmer days during Feb. and march were the ideal days for the sap to flow. This year the men of Mt. Rogers have made more maple syrup than ever before. At Mr. Rogers School a meal of pancakes with Whitetop's own maple syrup, country sausage, applesauce and drink will be served from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arts and crafts will be on display for purchase at the school. Tours of the tapping area on Whitetop Mountain will be given every half hour beginning at 11 a.m. The Sugar House will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for demonstrations of the syrup making process. Syrup and Candy will be available at the Sugar House for purchase. A slide show alternating with mountain storytelling and folklore will be at Faith Lutheran Church above the school beginning at 1 p.m. Old time and bluegrass music can be heard at the Mt. Rogers Fire Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Watch for the Maple Leaf signs for directions to each event. To get to Whitetop from Elkin, take I-77 North to the Hillsville-Galax exit, (Hwy 58), and travel West to Whitetop.
