School superintendent honored by alma mater
High Point University recently highlighted Elkin City Schools’ superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe in its alumni profile.
Bledsoe was September’s highlight. He graduated from High Point University in 1978 after majoring in physical education and minoring in biology.
He earned a doctorate in education in 2006 and began working at Elkin City Schools five years ago as the school system’s superintendent.
Bledsoe told the alumni profiler he had many fond memories of his time there, including dances, baseball games and sledding down the hill behind the cafeteria in the snow.
He was very involved in school athletics along with his major.
He served as the public address announcer and the “voice of the Panthers” - the school mascot - during basketball season.
“No flashing lights, video boards or music, but it was a great time and I was proud to do what I could to bring excitement and information to the game,” Bledsoe said.
He also worked as Coach Chuck Hartman’s baseball statistician, scorekeeper, manager and trainer for three years.
Looking back, Bledsoe said the years were life changers for him.
“There are many life-long lessons I learned from Coach Hartman and the friendships I made with the players have lasted since,” he said.
Bledsoe still keeps in touch with his college friends. Even if it’s only a phone call, he tries to bridge the distance and stay close to those who lives miles and miles away now.
Bledsoe now serves on the Alumni Board, a position he has held for four years.
