Errors doom Elks against Forbush

EAST BEND - On a windy night in East Bend, the Buckin’ Elks could not find their footing against 2A powerhouse Forbush.
Elkin booted the ball around the infield early on, committing six errors on the night en route to a 12-2 mercy-rule defeat to the Falcons.
“We just couldn’t play defense,” head coach Steve Martin said. “I’m frustrated. If you don’t make plays, you’re going to get whooped. And until we start catching the ball and making plays, it’s going to be ugly.”
The Elks fell behind just two batters into the game when Carson Fulp brought home Bryson Lee to give Forbush an early 1-0 advantage.
After back-to-back errors in the infield loaded the bases, Austin Levengood plated a pair of runs to extend the lead out to 3-0.
Lee and Fulp pushed the lead to 5-0 on back-to-back run-scoring hits in the second.
Elkin fought back in the top of the third, putting two runners on base after drawing full-count walks. Jamey Cranford brought home both runners after skying a flyball to left that was misplayed, that cut the deficit to 5-2.
But the Elks gave the gift runs back in the next half-inning when two runners scored on another error in the outfield as Forbush pushed its lead out to 7-2.
Lee picked up his second run-scoring hit of the night in the next at-bat, chasing Cranford from the game down 8-2.
Two more miscues in the fourth allowed the Falcons to push across four more runs and grab a commanding 12-2 advantage.
Brad Dzeskewicz finished off the Elks in the fifth, striking out the side, to end the game courtesy of the five-run mercy-rule.
Elkin only managed one hit in the game off starter Mason Doub - a seeing-eye single up the middle by Ted Shore - and fell 12-2.
“I don’t know how good they are because we didn’t give them a game,” a disappointed Martin added.
With the loss, the Elks fell to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 in the rugged Mountain Valley Conference.
Elkin looks to bounce back from the defeat with two road games this week - Tuesday night at 1A front-runner West Wilkes and Thursday night against East Surry.
“We’re going to have to put this one behind us and move forward,” Martin said.
