The Town of Dobson will celebrate a first this Saturday, Dec. 1, at the 28th Annual Dobson Christmas Parade.

The town will display an 18-foot decorated Frasier Fur, now the official Christmas tree for the town.

“We’ve never had an official tree lighting,” said town manager Josh Smith. “The lighting ceremony is the perfect compliment to the annual parade.”

The tree lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. and is located at 307 North Main St. in Dobson.

It’s still a town secret on who will get honors to turn on the switch illuminating the tree. Some notables in contention are the town’s homecoming queen, possibly it’s mayor, or our pick as the most likely candidate being the parade’s Grand Marshall, Emily Byrd, news anchor for WGHP Fox 8.

Dobson’s annual parade, sponsored by the Lion’s Club and the Town of Dobson, will begin at 3:30 PM at Surry County Community College and will travel down Main Street to Town Hall.

“We expect close to four thousand this year,” said a jubilee Smith with a grin like Kris Kringle. Smith was particularly happy to point out that Dobson are one of a few municipalities remaining that distribute candy to the children from the parade floats.

“For us, it’s about keeping a tradition that’s special for the children, ” said Smith. “And our parade allows for horses too.”

Smith will be first to tell you that it takes more than a manager to put this event together. Rachel Pace, chair of Dobson’s Recreation Committee, has been charged with spearheading parade coordination behind the scenes.

“We’re very excited,” said Pace. “It’s all about the community and the children. We’re also happy to have participation from neighboring municipalities who will be in the parade too.”

In addition to magically-decorated Christmas floats, candy distribution to children and horses along the parade route, spectators will see performances by Surry Central High School’s band, it’s JROTC representatives, and Christmas carols by the Salem Baptist Church Choir.

Vendors from businesses and non-profits will also have items on display. Santa makes his visit, as well.
