A tractor-trailer, carrying 3,600 chickens for Wayne Farms and driven by Jimmy Mathis, collided with a mini-van at 9 a.m. on Monday. The truck fell on its side as the driver swerved into the new Mountain Park Fire Department building. Fire Chief Charles Sewell said there was considerable damage to the front of the building as the truck destroyed a column and two doors, stopping just short of causing extensive damage to one of the fire trucks parked inside. A hazardous materials squad was called from Mount Airy, and the N.C. State Patrol was investigating the wreck. There were no reported injuries, and the new fire truck recently put into service several weeks ago was not in the building at the time of the accident.
